She says that at the turn of the century, there really wasn’t a strategy involved, and most entrepreneurs used their own names on the marquee. But during the golden age of advertising in the 1950s, company execs began to think about how the name of the business would fit into something like a jingle — Mister Softee ice cream, for example.
